Notice of "Japan Practice Department" establishment
 
Dear friends of Lee and Li,
 
We are pleased to inform you that the Japan Practice Department will be established on the 1st of January 2021.
 
Currently, we have Japan practice groups in the Patent Department, the Trademark Department and the Corporate Department, and have provided services to Japanese companies (including their subsidiaries). In order to meet the increasing demand and to strengthen our services to Japanese companies, we have decided to integrate these groups and establish the "Japan Practice Department".
 
We will provide comprehensive legal and intellectual property related services, including, but not limited to:
Legal
l   M&A, investments in Taiwan
l   Finance (loans, financial products)
l   Fraudulent acts inside companies
l   Various government permits and approvals, import-related regulations and land-
    related regulations
l   Drafting employment rules and other internal rules; labor disputes and other labor
    law-related services
l   The Personal Data Protection Act, the Consumer Protection Act, and product
     liability laws
l   Merger filings, cartels and other antitrust law-related services
l   Review of agreements pertaining to energy-related businesses and public 
    procurements, and disputes relating to those agreements
l   Disputes related to intellectual property rights (negotiations, drafting warning
    letters)
l   Other civil, criminal, and administrative litigations and arbitrations, mediations
l   Corporate reorganization, bankruptcy
l   Closure of offices in Taiwan
l   Drafting and reviewing various agreements
l   Translation of various legal documents
 
Patents
l   Applications to the Intellectual Property Office of Taiwan for invention patents,
    utility model patents, design patents
l   Applications to the China National Intellectual Property Administration (Mainland
    China) for invention patents, utility model patents, design patents.
l   Applications to other foreign intellectual property offices (including EPO) for 
    invention patents, utility model patents, design patents, and hub applications 
    together with applications in Taiwan and Mainland China.
l   Prior art searches, collecting materials to be used at invalidation actions, number
    searches, research relating to infringement, landscape searches, patents mapping
l   Monitoring patent applications by other companies
l   Obtaining patent publications
l   Validity assessments
l   Infringement assessments
l   Discovery of inventions and preparation of patent specifications
l   Translating descriptions and technical documents, or reviewing translations
l   Advice on prior user rights and supporting notarization to prove such
l   Invalidation proceedings
l   Providing information regarding application for invention patents, utility model
    patents, design patents
l   Appealing against decisions of rejection or invalidation
l   Administrative litigations and civil litigations related to registration of invention
    patents, utility model patents, design patents
l   Intellectual property valuation
l   Annuity managements
l   Intellectual property education for staff of subsidiaries in Taiwan
 
Trademarks
l   Trademark research, applications for registration;
l   Suggesting trademark protection strategies;
l   Applications for opposition, trial for invalidation and trial for cancellation, or
    assisting responses to these applications;
l   Transferring or licensing trademarks, or registering pledges on the trademarks;
l   Management of trademarks and copyrights;
l   Customs registrations for preventing import of infringing products;
l   Drafting and reviewing contracts relating to trademark and copyright
l   Disputes on trademarks and copyrights, such as, suggesting strategies regarding
    infringement litigations, consulting, investigations, evidence-collection and handling
    litigations
 
The Japan Practice Department will have more than 100 staff members. We aim to strengthen our ability to provide integrated services for the cases related to both intellectual property and legal affairs.
 
Our staff e-mail addresses, location, telephone numbers, and extension numbers will not be changed. Given that we moved our Taipei office in June 2019, the current location and telephone numbers are as written at the end this e-mail.
 
We will continue to make efforts for Japanese companies to manage intellectual property, strengthen compliance, and to prevent and resolve disputes in Taiwan. We appreciate your continued support.
